A well-fitting bra shouldn't be rocket science. Here, we break it down for you Pantry-style, in four simple steps.
Centre Wire
When pressing down on the underwire that runs around the breast you should feel the rib cage. The wire is meant to contour around the breast tissue ‘cupping’ you rather than pressing onto the breast itself.
If you feel breast tissue, the cup is too small and will cause discomfort throughout the day. If the cup is too big you will find the wire will be sitting further away towards your back.
80% of a bra's support comes from the back strap. The perfect fit should allow 1/2-inch to 1-inch resistance.
Any looser and the bra will ride up at the back, causing the front to sag. Too tight results in an uncomfortable fit that will feel constrictive and painful to wear for long periods of time.
Shoulder Straps
Shoulder straps are the last thing to be adjusted on a bra. If all the other fit points are correct, these straps are used to lift the fabric of the cups as opposed to bearing the full weight of the breasts.
You should comfortably be able to slip a finger underneath - too tight and it will cause discomfort, too loose and the straps will fall down.
